Regardless of whatever mess they've made in their other models, this is the greatest thing the Germans have done in a while, in my mind.

Problem?

Yes.
The "Lets make everything look like a 911" attitude that Porsche designers have is laziness to end all laziness.

On that front, I do agree. The only thing BMW did to make it look like a BMW were the fake kidney grilles (and only because they're obligated to).

Isn't the 918 also like 8x the price of the i8?

Probably more.

This is the first car that has actually made me want to buy one new, to me buying new is one of the worst ideas in the car world and yet if I had the means I would snatch this up the moment it hit the market.

The only company that is allowed to do it is Aston Martin, because sex.
If Porsche made genuinely, bite the back of your hand gorgeous cars, they would get a pass.
But they don't. They make that. That is not glorious.
That is German beige. The 918 is the hypercar Camry.

Holy shit you're right

But Porsche already perfected the most beautiful looking 911.
It's called a Cayman.

HOLY SHIT A WILD GAMECAT APPEARED!

Now you know my struggle.

It's the difference between a designed car with styling tweaks, and a styled car with design tweaks.

I don't think it looks too much like a 911. But I still agree with your general point. Porsche is very conservative with how their cars look. Even if a car doesn't look exactly like a 911 it still looks very "Porsche". It's always been that way.
I would like to see them push the envelope a bit more than they do, at least on their range toppers. Ferrari often strikes out and makes a fugly car. But they also strike gold sometimes. You have to be willing to push the limits of design to occasionally hit a home run with something new and unique.

Ahem. They got it right with the 911.
(Screwed it up with the Panamera, but the rest are okay.)
